I am looking to buy a cutter and was wondering what all I should look for? I mostly plan to use if for cutting tackle twill material, but it will gets used for vinyl as well. What size would be good? Any other tips? I looked on eBay and they have some 36 inch ones that seem like a pretty good deal.

Look for a 36" Mimaki. The nice thing about it is you can do everything from Illustrator and it is very very easy. Had mine for 3 years and I have only changed the blade once. I only cut vinyl and paper though. But being able to do everything from one program is the best.

Since you are mainly looking at cutting twill and sign vinyl I would suggest either a 24'' Graphtec CE5000 - 60 or a Roland GX 24. I have one of each and they are both superb machines. The Graphtec comes with a stand but Roland charges an extra $300 for one. Mimaki and Summa both make great plotters also. I would advise staying away from most machines on eBay. You can get a brand new, warranted machine that will last for years for just a few hundred dollars more. It's worth it in the long run. |
